Celebrating the First Advent (Christmas Eve)

We had a busy week getting together with friends for pre-Christmas celebrations and making preparations for celebrations on Christmas eve and Christmas Day.

Last evening we attended the Christmas Eve service at Racine Bible Church as a family and then gathered at our home with some friends from our church family (the Boecks, Lowells, "Miss Bose", "Miss Woodpecker", Wollins, and "Teacher Judy"). We neglected to get many pictures but we had a nice evening enjoying food, fun and fellowship. Darien led the adults and children in reading the Christmas story, singing Christmas songs, and the final lighting of the advent wreath.

Our Little Giver(s)
Over the past week we have talked a lot with the kids about the real meaning of our Christmas celebration being the Jesus coming to earth in the form of a baby. For kids it is easy to get wrapped up (literally) in receiving gifts.

Luke and Noelle were eager to become givers of gifts rather than just recipients this year. They worked with mom and Grandma Bowers before Thanksgiving to concot bubble bath for their friends. They each named many, many friends who they wished to share their pink and blue bubble bath with....some of you are out of state and we thought it wise not to ship fragile glass bubble across the country (but please know that you were thought of).

Friday evening Luke suprised us by insisting that he give a special gift to two boys he admires, Sam and Rylie DeBurgh. Luke selected two of his well liked matchbox cars and asked us to help him wrap them so he could give them to these two boys (Luke was pretty convinced that Sam and Rylie wouldn't be too interested in bubble bath).

So happy that you enjoyed a Merry Christmas Eve, Libby!!! Sounds like a fun crowd to have.

I love the story of Luke and giving to his friends. I'll never forget David's birthday just 4 short months ago, when Glendon insisted on wrapping up his very worn, used, quite dirty stuffed soccer ball for David. At the time, this ball was his most prized pocession, but I valued what he was doing so much. David kept the ball for about a week and then graciously returned it to Glendon...
I guess the point in what Luke and Glendon did is that kids are so much quicker to give sacrificially then are we. We think to go and buy something - they think to give that item that they treasure....
Good stuff.

Enjoy your vacation - is Darien off all week?

hey, bowers! it's the alberts in california. :) Thanks for the christmas letter and picture and for the link to your blog...it's fun to see how much your kids have grown and what you've been up to. We're hoping to send out a letter and picture after baby #3 is born (she's due in 2 weeks!)... I'm so thankful we can keep in touch at least once a year now that you guys are so far away. Hope the rest of 2007 is a joyful one for you!!
